Common questions

What makes two fractions equivalent?
They name the same number. Multiply the top and bottom of a fraction by the same whole number and the value does not change: 3/8 = 6/16 = 9/24 = 12/32.
How do I rewrite 3/8 in 64ths?
64 is 8 × 8, so multiply top and bottom by 8: 3/8 = 24/64.
Why can’t 3/8 be written in twelfths?
12 is not a multiple of 8, so no whole-number multiplier gets there: 3/8 in twelfths would be 4.5/12, and a fraction of a piece is not a count of pieces. This page says “not possible” rather than rounding.
Where this comes from. Exact rational arithmetic on the values shown — fractions are pairs of integers until display, and inch–metric conversion uses 25.4 mm to the inch, exact by definition since 1959. See the full methodology.
