How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common divisor. For 24/64 the GCD is 8: 24 ÷ 8 = 3 and 64 ÷ 8 = 8, so 24/64 = 3/8.
How do I know when a fraction is fully reduced?
When the numerator and denominator share no factor but 1. 3/8 is fully reduced because 3 and 8 have no common divisor; 6/16 is not, because both divide by 2.
Does simplifying change the value?
No. 24/64 and 3/8 are the same number — the same point on the number line, the same 0.375. Simplifying only changes how the number is written.
