Common questions
- How do I turn a fraction into a decimal?
- Divide the numerator by the denominator: 3/8 means 3 ÷ 8, which is 0.375. This page does the division exactly and tells you whether the decimal ends or repeats.
- Why do some fractions repeat forever as decimals?
- A fraction in lowest terms ends only when its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. So 3/8 ends at 0.375, while 1/3 repeats as 0.333… — written here as 0.(3), which is exact.
- Is 1/3 equal to 0.333?
- No. 0.333 is 333/1000, slightly less than 1/3. The exact decimal form of 1/3 is the repeating 0.(3); any finite string of 3s is an approximation, and this page marks it as one.
